If you have a puppy at home you have to be very watchful. They are very naughty and can be eating anything which they find attractive. If you want them to be healthy you can’t lose track of them as a pet owner. This is the age when the puppy will explore around and sniff and eat anything they like. They might swallow any object, which might give them loose stool and an upset stomach. Taking care of your puppy involves many things that you might not enjoy.

It might not be a very good sight to pick up the poop. However, it is very important to know what comes of your puppy’s poop. It makes you understand the condition of the puppy easily. Now the question arises what you do when the puppy is suffering from diarrhea but is still playful.

What Are the Common Causes of Puppy Diarrhea?

As you know that your puppy is in an explorer mode when they are young. Eating things which are not good for them is one of the main reasons why they have diarrhea. The puppy might get an irritative digestion and start expelling the contents through the poop which is unsuitable for them.

Mainly, diet plays a very important role in the puppy’s healthy growth. You should not forget that the puppy has a very sensitive stomach and can’t digest everything. It may be possible that the puppy is sensitive to certain ingredients which you have been feeding it. So, you should keep a watch on the ingredients which you are giving the puppy and try juggling the contents to check which one is causing the problem. When you find the ingredient, which is causing the concern, remove it from your puppy’s diet. You may even try changing the quality of food to a better-quality pet food and see if that works out for your puppy.

Many a times it’s the parasites which can be one of the reasons for diarrhea in puppies. It might be in their body since birth or they might have got it from the environment later on. The parasites such as roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, giardia and coccidia are the cause of loose stools in puppies.

It would be the worst case if your pup is infected with parvo, which is a viral infection. One of the symptoms of this viral infection is diarrhea, as it messes with the digestive system of puppies and dogs.

What You Can Do at Home When Your Puppy Has Diarrhea but is Still Playful?

If you observe that your puppy is suffering from diarrhea but is still playful you can understand that it is a slight or a mild case of diarrhea. This is still good news as you can get this treated at home.

To start with, you might give yogurt, as it is a good bacteria and helps in reducing the stomach infection. It calms the stomach of the puppy and helps it to normalize it. It is understood that your puppy might not like the taste but if mixed with some tasty treats, your puppy won’t like to miss it. You can add 6 oz of yogurt in the puppy’s daily diet for the time being.

Always make sure the puppy is being fed on time, you should give them the correct amount of food and enough water. Water helps in keeping the body hydrated as the puppy is losing enough water through loose stool, it is better that the water content is sufficient. However, make sure the meals are not heavy. Provide those smaller amounts every couple of hours. The total amount of food should be the same as given before but in small amounts. This is because they might not be able to digest the food because of the stomach infection.

You can try giving bland food like white rice as it can be good for puppies who are suffering from diarrhea. You can even mix the rice with the chicken or a broth of vegetables that will give it a good flavor. Try giving the puppy cooked white rice with cooked sweet or plain potato to help them gain their healthy digestion.

There are many medicines which can be administered to pets when they have an upset stomach such as Pepto Bismol, Imodium AD & Kaopectate. There are certain medicines for puppies and dogs like DiaBec. These medicines can be bought under the supervision of a Vet, as they will be able to tell you the dose required on the basis of age, size and breed of the puppy or dog.
