New breed name recognised
by British Kennel Club

THE General Committee if the British Kennel Club has decided to approve the recognition of the Cirneco dell'Etna breed. It has been added to the imported breed register in the hound group.

The breed has the same general appearance as the pharaoh hound, but is smaller - generally 16-19 inches high.

They come from the island of Sicily, where they are used for hunting rabbits. The first Cirneco ever to be imported by Britain arrived there in April last year. It was brought in from Italy by Maureen amd Marina Foley.

Norwegian elkhound now recognised

THE British Kennel Club has now recognised the name Norwegian elkhound, rather than just elkhound as previously. The move means that Britain is now in line with most other countries that recognise the breed.

It was the British Elkhound Club that started the ball rolling with a request for the name change last year.

Now the name has been recognised the club must register a change of title. Several suggestions have been forwarded and the club members will vote on their preferences.
