NESTLE New Zealand has joined forces with North Piha lifeguards to help an abandoned puppy recover from life-threatening injuries.
The puppy, who has been named Spot, was found alone on North Piha Beach several weeks ago with a severe break in her left front leg.
She was rescued by Scott Butler and taken to a local vet for treatment. Spot needed urgent treatment and the North Piha lifeguards banded together to raise money for her surgery and care.
She has now been adopted by volunteer lifeguard William Goer.
Spot is well on the way to full health but the story of her ordeal reached Nestle New Zealand.
"We heard about Spot and her courageous personality and wanted to help in some way," said Nick Perry, brand manager of the Tux branch of Nestle New Zealand. "We felt the best way to help was to make sure Spot was getting the right kind of nutrition."
Spot is about nine months old and needs to be on a special puppy diet for another three months, so the company donated three months' supply of Tux puppy food.
Spot has had a tough start to life, but with her well-balanced diet and the care that she receives from her new owner, she is certain to enjoy much improved health.
While William Goer is officially Spot's new owner, it is clear she's been adopted by all the North Piha lifeguards.
"Spot is now our club dog and enjoys riding on the back of the club's four-wheel-drive bike," said Williams. "She is very smart and playful and that keeps us all entertained."
