A Dog's Life
(Good dog owner's guide)
THIS very useful book is put out by the Hamilton City Council to help all dog owners, and is free to dog owners at the time of registration.
Information covers council policy and intent, education, enforcement and legislation, financial considerations and a section on parks in the Hamilton area.
I feel that this final section is very important - it lists those parks where owners are required to keep their dog leashed, and those where dogs under good control can walk and play freely off the leash.
These areas have been positioned so that dog owners are never very far from a suitable park and as long as they do the right thing and remove any of their dog's droppings, these areas are there for them to use at will.
They are a shared gift to all responsible dog owners.
Information can also be obtained from the new animal care and control unit, which has an education area and undertakes school talks, club lectures and general information.
Dog care, behaviour and hydatids information completes a book that the council has obviously prepared with the welfare of the city's dogs in mind, and it can be proud of its achievement.
I would love to hear from councils around New Zealand that are similarly working with dog owners with information and assistance beyond the basic requirements of their own city bylaws. - EP
