The accident-prone top 10 dogs
in Britain

Bandaged dog clipartTesco Personal Finance, an insurance company in Britain that insures pets as well as people, has released some surprising figures regarding dogs and their clumsiness.

Top placing, for the most accident-prone canine in Britain, goes to the chocolate Labrador. According to statistics more than half the chocolate Labradors in Britain will need extensive veterinary treatment at some stage of their lives. With 55% of owners having made claims the chocolate is more than twice as likely as the black Labrador to suffer accident or illness.

Second placing goes to the Staffordshire bull terrier at 52% and third to the Rottweiler at 44%.

And good news for the owners of poodles - they are the least likely to need veterinary repair at a score of only one in every five, closely followed by shih-tzus at 22%

Britain has 10.4 million dog owners who spend about 124million pounds on pet insurance every year. The German Shepherd is Britain's most popular dog, and it comes in at seventh in the clumsy stakes with 37% needing veterinary treatment.

The top 10 in order of clumsiness are:

  • Chocolate Labrador
  • Staffordshire bull terrier
  • Rottweiler
  • Springer spaniel
  • German shepherd cross
  • Cocker spaniel
  • German shepherd
  • Golden retriever
  • Border collie
  • Yorkshire terrier

Among the accidents the insurance company covered were a West Highland terrier that broke its leg when a television set fell on it, and a border collie that escaped with minor injuries when it chased a stick that its owner threw over a stone wall. The collie went straight over after it ... but there was a 30ft drop on the other side!
