Changes to the Animal Welfare Act are now in force and owners must provide their pets with: A proper diet including fresh water; suitable living quarters whether inside the house or in a warm, weatherproof kennel; provide for their need to be housed with, or apart from, any other animals; allowing them to express their normal behaviour; protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease. The penalty for failure to provide such care could be a fine or a prison sentence.
