New charity ready to launch

More on this charity to comeA NEW charity, Hounds for Heroes, is reportedly at launch stage. A long-time dream of Allen Parton, himself a casualty in the Gulf War, and his wife Sandra, the launch has been advanced thanks to a very generous donation that Allen received after talking to an interested visitor at Crufts earlier this year.

The charity will train service dogs to assist those injured on active duty in the military services or in services at home such as Search and Rescue. Four trustees – serving officers just back from Hellman – have been registered and the launch just awaits receipt of the charity number. More news in our March issue.

New name for Feeding pets of the Homeless

PETS of the Homeless is the new name for Feeding Pets of the Homeless. Pets of the Homeless is a national volunteer non-profit organization that collects pet food and awards grants to veterinarians that administer vaccines and medical care to pets of the homeless and needy. The new name will better identify the organization.

“We decided to rebrand with a new name and logo that better captures the essence and spirit of our non-profit and what we contribute to communities across the country.” said Genevieve Frederick, founder and executive director of Pets of the Homeless. She said, “We are excited to also announce that we are redesigning our website and will launch it in 2010.”

The non-profit selected Pets of the Homeless as its new name because the organization’s members and volunteers do more than collect donated pet food and work with food banks and soup kitchens to distribute to the homeless and needy; the non-profit provides medical care through grants to licensed veterinarians who go to where the homeless congregate and offer vaccines and minor medical care to pets of the homeless. Since 2008, over $18,000 has been allocated.

Pets of the Homeless is listed on GuideStar and has joined Facebook Causes and invites people interested in pets and the homeless to join the group as a supporter or fan. For more information visit www.petsofhomeless.org or call (775) 841-7463.

Walton canine team in quick catch

This catch was one of the quickest
The quick catch team - an example of canine and human working together for an excellent result.
IN May 2009, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office called and requested assistance from the Walton Canine Team. A Walton County resident had returned home to see two white males fleeing his home after breaking and entering. In less than 10 minutes the Canine Team (Sergeant C. A. Godwin, Officer D. Landingham, Officer D. Ward, and Officer D. Byrd) was activated and enroute to the crime scene. Sergeant Godwin put Bloodhound K-9 “Charlie” on the track of the two subjects and within minutes both subjects were taken into custody.

The victims’ personal property was recovered thanks to the quick response from the “Team.” Both subjects were charged with burglary and possession of marijuana. It was just 26 minutes from the time Walton CI received the assistance call, until Sergeant Godwin radioed that the subjects were in the custody of Walton county sheriffs.
