ON Friday December 5, 2008, His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO visited Canine Partners' (Registered Charity No. 803680) National Training Centre in West Sussex. The assistance dog charity’s patron spent his time in Heyshott meeting potential new applicants, experiencing a demonstration of the dogs in action, as well as seeing how the new on-site training facility is progressing. He was accompanied by the new Lord-Lieutenant for West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper.
Canine Partners has this year seen an increase of over 50 percent in the number of dogs trained since 2007. The team looks well placed to continue this growth, with plans to produce 50 new partnerships in 2009. Next year’s opening of new on-site accommodation for residential training courses will significantly improve the service delivered to applicants and completes the current phase of building, opened by the Duke of Gloucester in 2005.
Isabel Campbell, director of fundraising and marketing, commented: “It is always a privilege to receive a visit from our patron. It is particularly timely towards the end of a year in which we have seen significant growth in the number of dogs trained, despite a difficult financial climate. We were pleased to be able to show the Duke of Gloucester how well the new building is progressing, which we plan to officially open next year as the charity heads towards its 20th Anniversary.”
Officially launched in 1991, Canine Partners enables disabled people to enjoy greater independence and a better quality of life through the help of specially trained dogs. Training assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities enriches human life in practical ways such as with dressing and undressing, supermarket shopping and vital emergency response procedures. In addition it provides physiological, psychological and social benefits that help keep people healthy and happy.
As a registered charity Canine Partners receives no government funding and is wholly dependent on public donations and legacies. For further information on fundraising, donations, volunteering or applying for a Canine Partner, please call 08456 580480 or visit www.caninepartners.co.uk.
