ROYAL Navy Gulf war veteran, Allen Parton and his ever faithful hound Endal were recently invited to address the committee, current serving personnel and invited guests at the annual general meeting of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (RNBT) held at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, Hampshire.

Allen Parton was an appropriate speaker to address the gathered audience as he had spend most of his career training as a weapons electronics engineer at HMS Collingwood so it was quite an emotional homecoming to a place that holds such fond memories for him.

"As a beneficiary that has been helped by the RNBT in my greatest hour of need following my injury whilst on active service in the 1991 Gulf war," Allen said, "it was so nice to be able to so publically and personally to thank all those who have helped servicemen and servicewomen, including myself, over the past 80 years. My very first manual wheelchair was funded by the RNBT, as was our move from naval married quarters to the house at Clanfield that we now live in.

All of us can fall on hard times because of circumstances beyond our control and without the help and assistance of organizations such as the RNBT the situation could be far worse for so many brave service personnel injured in conflicts around the world and their families. The recent commemoration of the Falklands war has been a stark reminder to all that so many naval sailors lost their lives or were seriously injured and it is through the work of the RNBT that their suffering can be alleviated."

The meeting was also addressed by the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Jonathon Band who gave a talk on the future of the Royal Navy and the way ahead for the military in an ever-changing world which is experiencing so many power struggles between warring nations.
