Brown rice with chicken
1 large pack of chicken thighs, wings or giblets
1 packet of frozen mixed vegetables about 500g
1 cup brown rice
Cook the chicken slowly in a large pot or crockpot with enough water to completely cover the chicken, until well done. Allow to cool and remove the bones, putting the chicken meat and skin back in the pot. Do not drain the liquid. Add a cup of brown rice and cook until the rice is softened (you may need to add a little water if the mixture becomes dry), then take the pot off the heat, add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and stir. The meal is now ready.
If your dog is on a diet for heart or weight problems the chicken skin can be removed with the bones. Also when cooling the chicken take it to chill point so that any chicken fat is hardened on top of the pot contents. Completely remove that fat layer before adding the rice.
Chicken porridge
1 large packet of chicken thighs or chicken pieces
1 large cup rolled oats
1 large bag forzen mixed vegetables
Cook chicken in pot or crock pot until well cooked, then cool and remove any bones. If your dog is on a low-fat diet remove any skin as well, and chill the pot until the chicken fat forms a hard layer. Remove the fat layer completely. Put the pot back on the stove and add a large cup of rolled oats. You may need to add a cup of water if the liquid has reduced too far. Cook, stirring all the time, until the mixture is like a thickened chicken stew. Take the pot off the heat and add a large bag of frozen mixed vegetables and stir. The meal is now ready.
For more variety try the following:
Use beef or lamb instead of the chicken and cook it in exactly the same way.
Use liver or heart, again cooked the same way, as an occasional special treat.
For dogs on a diet, tripe is a very good alternative to the chicken.
Pasta can be used instead of rolled oats or rice.
Potatoes can also replace the oats or rice, or they can added to the whole.
Instead of using frozen vegetables, cut up a variety of fresh vegetables and add to the pot at the same time as you add the rice or oats. Never use any form of onion or garlic as these can be toxic to dogs.
Suggested vegetables:
Spinach, dandelion leaves, carrots, carrot tops, curly kale, pumpkin or squash, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, rocket, celery (leaves as well), tomato, asparagus, beans, peas, courgettes, watercress.
