Greyhounds As Pets prove
popular in NZ homes
 |
| Greyhounds are always willing to please and non-aggressive, so are perfect pets. |
GREYHOUNDS As Pets (GAP), launched in March this year, has reached its annual target of rehoming 50 retired racing greyhounds during its first year of operation, in only six months. Dog number 50, named Jumbo, has been rehomed to a family in Christchurch.
GAP was established by Greyhound Racing New Zealand to rehome ex-racing greyhounds into loving homes. It is run out of a kennel facility in the Manawatu but rehomes dogs all over New Zealand. GAP business manager Jacqui Eyley said that they were thrilled that so many people had contacted them to become involved in the programme and to take home a greyhound as a pet.
"It's great to see these families getting so much pleasure out of having a pet greyhound as part of their home. The response to the programme has been overwhelming and the support that we receive from our sponsors, foster carers and those who are now involved after adopting a greyhound is much appreciated.
"We've had to overcome many misconceptions about the breed including that they are aggressive, need lots of exercise and aren't suited to family life. In actual fact the greyhound breed is one of the most docile dog breeds, it requires very little exercise and is really willing to please, so makes the perfect pet. With so many greyhounds already adopted, hopefully the message continues to filter through so that more people can enjoy the companionship of a greyhound in their homes," she said.
Once entered into the programme, the ex-racers are put through an assessment process prior to being rehomed. This includes testing their attitude to cats, other dogs and children, to ensure that they are 'matched' to an appropriate home that will meet both the needs of the dog and the family.

Greyhound Racing New Zealand chief executive Lance Bickford said that organisation members were pleased that the programme had been so successful with so many different people around New Zealand becoming involved.
"Our trainers and owners who are submitting their ex-racers into the programme are really pleased with the professional approach that GAP has taken to rehoming dogs. It's good to know that they are not just being rehomed to anyone, but are matched in detail to their new homeowner to ensure a happy relationship.
"The greyhound code is becoming increasingly aware of animal welfare issues and it's been great to be able to get the first adoption programme in the NZ racing industry off the ground and see it being successful," he said.
Greyhounds As Pets is always looking for new foster carers, adoption homes and sponsors to become involved in the programme. The group encourages anyone who would like to become involved to contact them directly or visit www.greyhoundsaspets.org.nz.
