The Dogs holds family
carnival in Wairarapa

GRNZ logoGREYHOUND Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) again held the Interprovincial Challenge and Family Carnival Day this year at Solway Park in Masterton on January 4, 2006, from noon onwards. With such a great turnout from both racing enthusiasts, families and children last year, the carnival has now become an annual event in Wairarapa.

The Interprovincial Challenge provides the opportunity for trainers throughout New Zealand to race against their rival provinces.

With $6000 as prize money, the challenge attracts some of the best greyhounds and their trainers into Wairarapa for a three-day period. NZ chief executive Lance Bickford said that the event is based around some fun-filled racing and some entertainment for children and families alike.

This event is part of the NZ Still Destination Holiday Summer Racing brand, which was recently launched by the New Zealand Racing Board.

This year the major non-racing entertainment event was the Find the Dog a Bone children's treasure hunt with some fantastic prizes won, including an Apple eMac computer and Apple Ipod.

There were also fox terrier races where the kids brought along their pet terriers to race against other dogs for a prize. There were bouncey castles for the very young and the More FM Chase the Bunny event, plus loads more.

"Every year we invite everyone to come along, bring the kids and have a great family day out. If you haven't experienced greyhound racing before, this is a great opportunity to see what it is all about," Mr Bickford said.

"Entry into Solway Park was $5 per person and anyone under 18 enters free - we hope to keep the entry cost at that level next year as well. Each entry receives a complimentary event pack to help enjoy the day. Franchises such as Subway, Fuel and Rush Munros were also on-site.

"Children who entered the Find the Dog a Bone treasure hunt had a marvellous time on the day and won some much appreciated prizes. We very much look forward to seeing everyone back in Masterton for next year's carnival. It's the perfect way to wind down after the holiday period and a great way to entertain the kids for a day," Mr Bickford said.
