Hello,
I AM very interested in any information you have about training programs for dogs that can pick up on diabetic insulin reactions. I currently have a nine-and-a-half year old German shepard named Holly who in the past six years has learned on her own to alert me to my low blood sugars. I have been diabetic for 48 of my 50 years and am now not very symptomatic of my reactions. Holly will retrieve a can of coke for me and sit on top of me until I drink. I am going through a divorce and will soon be living on my own therefore I feel I need to have a trained assitance dog to help in my care if possible.
Holly has been diagnosed with some kidney problems so I may need to have her put down in the future. At this point I am trying to gather as much information as possible because as your 30 year old gentleman has stated it makes an enormous difference to be able to live independently as well as the companionship of unconditional love and a wet nose. Thank you very much for listening-reading. I hope you have a wonderful new year. Thank you for your help. I look forward to hearing from you. - Karen
Hello,
I AM a certified Canine Search Specialist (CSS) with the New Mexico Task Force-1 (NMTF-1). I am very interested in helping train and use dogs for diagnosis of melanoma, prostrate cancer, breast cancer, epileptic seizures, or any other disease that a canine can detect more quickly and in a less invasive way than modern medicine has done to date.
Is there anyone I can contact that I can help with this endeavor? If so, would you please give them my email and-or phone number to contact me or give me their information for me to contact them? - Donna, ResQ_k9@hotmail.com
These letters are both about a similar subject though the interest is in different aspects. There is an article about the subject of training dogs for disabilities a few pages on in this issue which may help - it seems the organisations that may offer some assistance or further information are DogAID in Britain or Top Dog in USA. If either of you manage to contact the organisation concerned and get some more information I am sure the readers would love to hear it. However, I will also ask any reader who can help with either of your requests to email me, ziggy1@k9magazinefree.com and let us know. - Ed
