Dog Squad close to
community's heart

THE Hamilton SPCA's founding Dog Squad is a foursome to be reckoned with. Together they have helped raise thousands of dollars for less fortunate members of their species through their attendance at Waikato events and open days, and by demonstrating their obedience skills.

The Dog Squad was formed in 1996. Foundation members and their owners were Liz Vickery and Spot, Adrienne Corfe and Elle, Jessica Macfarlane and Folly, and Nikki Beehre with Mum.

Spot the Dalmation was rescued from the Hamilton City Council dog pound, where he was being held as a stray. He is a lively fellow, loves long walks and children, and lives with four cats - all from the SPCA.

Elle was adopted by Adrienne who saw her advertised in the Waikato Times. Her previous owner wanted a show dog, but Elle did not fit the requirements. She is affectionate, obedient, loves everyone and became a mother for the first time in 1998. Adrienne kept one of her pups, Trudeh, who it is hoped will later take Elle's place in the Dog Squad.

Since she was a puppy Folly, the St Bernard, has lived with Jessica. Together they have raised over $7000 for the SPCA branch through monthly town visits. Folly has appeared on Coast to Coast and Prime Time TV, and is quite a celebrity in Waikato.

Mum is a real rescue dog. Her first owner killed her pups, then attacked her with a cricket bat. Fortunately he was reported, charged and successfully prosecuted. Mum was given to the SPCA, and she won the heart of Nikki, who was on duty when the petrified little dog was brought in. Nikki spent most of that weekend sitting in the pen, talking to her and coaxing her to eat.

Gradually she began to trust people again and the happiest day was when Nikki took her home. To celebrate the original team, Hamilton artist Val Deane has painted their portraits. Sets of cards featuring the team members are on sale now to aid SPCA funds. The squad will make an appearance at Centre Place, Hamilton, on July 24 and 25, where the original art work for the cards will also be displayed. Find out more about the squad on website www.spca.hamilton.net.nz
