Natural foods and their functions
 
The following foods are all good to use as supplements to a dog's daily intake:
- Oats - High in calcium, protein, and easily digested.
- Barley - Slightly laxative, aids digestion, good food for the young.
- Rice - High in carbohydrate, easily digested.
- Rye - High in fluoride, low in fat and carbohydrate, good for overweight dogs.
- Corn flakes - High in carbohydrates and iron.
- Slippery elm - Bark of the elm or red elm. Soothing, aid in weaning, convalescence.
- Arrowroot - Nutritious starch, a soothing aid for weaning, or for convalescence.
- Raisins and dried fruits - Dogs like fruit and it is a valuable food source with good vitamin and mineral content, and natural sugars.
- K,elp - High mineral content. Contains iodine which makes it good for hair, skin and pigment.
- Vegetables - Variety of green leafy and root vegetables will depend on season.
- Coconut - Provides fibre and helps in worm control.
- Lecithin - Found in oils. Contains choline and inositol, good for hair and skin.
- Herbs - Valuable vitamin and mineral content from such herbs as dandelion, nasturtium, parsley, alfalfa, lucerne, comfry, nettle leaf.
- Garlic - Antiseptic, cleansing, high in vitamin C, helps with worm control, a healing herb.
- Rosehips - Natural vitamin C and P
- Add a little raw honey and vegetable oil to food daily such as cold-pressed olive or safflower, wheat germ oil, or cod liver oil in winter.
