Your dog can be part of
the family holiday

The Complete Pet Travel Guide 2000
Compiled by Pauline Wagner
If you have ever wanted to take your pet on holiday with you but have come up against a brick wall when it came to booking accommodation, then you are among a large number of Kiwi pet owners. This book, now in its fourth edition, takes away any need for expensive 'trial and error' phone calls or letters - motels, camps etc that take animals are listed to make your task easier and a whole lot less expensive.
It is emphasised strongly that the majority of listings take pets by arrangement only - please do not book your own accommodation then 'just happen' to have your pet with you when you arrive or you could find that people with a prior arrangement have all the 'with pets' rooms available and you miss out.
Along with the listings which generally give details on where, when, how and for how much, there is some interesting information on homoeopathic first aid (for car sickness for instance) and dog food recipes that look delicious in a doggy sort of way.
Very important sections tell you where to go to find out about laws and bylaws, exercise areas and reserves, forest walks, wildlife areas to be avoided, leash-only areas and in some cases, district maps.
All this information can be gained from the Department of Conservation, and from city and district councils. For every district in New Zealand there is one important action that every good owner observes - wherever you are, there should be no evidence that you were there with your pet.
In the words of the Napier council, 'Scoop the Poop!' Some councils like the Napier one will even supply you with a disposable pup kit.
The book is well organised, easy to read and a welcome tool for those who travel with their dogs whether to shows, obedience, agility or field trials, or just to take the complete family on a family holiday.
