DOGS, diet and disease by Caroline Levin offers a look through the window at some of today's most prevalent canine illnesses that include pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, Cushings disease, liver disease, hypothyroidism and kidney complaints. The author tells the reader what the options are for treatment and how to feed and care for dogs that need more than just a little extra care.
Her best recommendations are in the nature of a change of diet - many foods can cause the metabolism to act in unfamiliar ways and the result is intolerance-related disease or illnesses that caused the body to react to familiar foods in strange new ways.
There is advice on traditional medications for treatment, and there is advice and information for those who do not want to use chemical medications unless completely necessary. Her ideas on diet are thought-provoking and bound to convert many readers.
Chapters include advice on normal canine metabolism and digestion; easy explanation of disease processes; autoimmune disease; commercial foods and their value, home-cooked meals and fresh foods; digestive enzymes and help for metabolism; Cushinoid dogs and their problems; giving insulin injections and blood glucose testing at home; urinary tract disease, infection and incontinence.
Caroline Levin's healthcare experience began when she was accepted as an ophthalmic registered nurse. After 10 years she began to work for a veterinary clinic in the same line of nursing. She wrote her first two works on the topic of blind dogs - Living With Blind Dogs and Blind Dog Stories.
Levin lost her obedience/show dog to an autoimmune disease and this event made her search for more information. She spoke to hundreds of experts and read constantly about such diseases, which then saw her writing her third book - the one under review.
Caroline Levin is also a dog trainer who has won training awards. She shows her dogs in AKC obedience trials and in canine sports. - EP
