SUSAN Calvert of Good Girl Designs is the program cover artist for the Chicagoland Family Pet Show. The show, open to the public, features over 350 exhibits and is being held at Arlington Park Racecourse in Arlington Heights, IL, March 19-21, 2004. Hours are Friday 2-8pm, Saturday 9am-8pm and Sunday 10am-6pm.
Calvert's watercolor paintings, colorful abstract representations of feline and canine life, are universal symbols for all cats and dogs. Calvert has been painting canines since 2001 and debuts her feline art at this year's show.
In addition to selling her original paintings, Calvert reproduces her art on note cards for sale to the general public. During the show, Calvert is donating 20 percent of her proceeds to two animal shelters - Save-A-Pet Adoption Center of Grayslake, IL and West Suburban Humane Society of Downer's Grove, IL.
Admission to the show ranges from $6-$9 per person. Parking is $6. For more information, contact Susan Calvert, phone (847)608-4996, visit the website www.susancalvert.com or see Good Girl Designs, Booth 161 at the Chicagoland Family Pet Show.
Susan says of her passion for dogs, "I rescue them from shelters, but I believe they rescue me. They provide companionship, inspiration for my work and help me cope with loneliness due to a managed environment because of asthma and MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity)".
"Many people indicate their cats provide them with the same comfort I have enjoyed from my dogs. Though I am unable to own cats because their indoor waste odor of ammonia triggers my illnesses, I have incorporated cats into my portfolio at the requests of other passionate pet owners like myself.
"I use mood-evoking color to move past breed specifics by painting happenings, circumstances and situations occurring in the lives of cats and dogs. I see similar parallels in animals and their human guardians. When we move past specifics of breed, race etc, I believe the bigger picture is to be loved and accepted."
