CANINE Companions for Independence (CCI) is a non-profit organisation that breeds, raises and trains dogs to lighten the daily workload of both adults and children with disabilities. Most who work for the organisation are volunteers, and most of their funds come from donations and fundraisers.

Love Heels - Tales From Canine Companions for Independence, is a beautifully designed and illustrated book celebrating the bonds that are formed between the canine companion and its disabled owner.

Readers are introduced first to the puppy breeders, raisers and trainers, and their precious little charges. It must take a very special person to raise such pups and then give them up when it is time for their serious training to start.

The human partners for the dogs are next to be introduced - many with disabilities that made their life almost unbearable - until they met their canine companion and helper. Such dogs respond to over 50 commands (and more are developed individually as the dog responds to its new owner's needs) and not only help the owners but also bring them the unconditional love that only a dog can provide.

This is a book that captures the relationship between humans and dogs. I recommend it to anyone who loves and appreciates our self-appointed life companions. The individual stories will have you laughing and crying, but most of all will leave you wondering how dogs came to know so much about humans and their physical and emotional needs.

A percentage of the proceeds from the book's sales will go to Canine Companions for Independence, so this is one way readers can assist in a very positive way. - EP
