Book Reviews:

Getting in TTouch with your dog

By Linda Tellington-Jones

Linda Tellington-Jones' new bookTHE well-known author's latest book tells dog owners how to use the gentle approach in influencing the behaviour of their pet, and how to keep the dog in a calm and attentive frame of mind.

Linda Tellington has worked with animals for over 40 years and her method of influencing dog behaviour, character and ability to learn (the TTouch method) is based on being a friend to your dog rather than a dominant pack leader. She maintains that there must be friendship and mutual respect between the owner and the dog to be able to bring out the best in its character and its ability to learn all the necessary attributes to survive in the human world.

Her method is based on a combination of 22 Touches along with a series of exercises that the dog really enjoys, and the action of these every day can improve the dog's health, performance and behaviour.

This is her first book especially for dog owners and anyone working with dogs such as vets, trainers, breeders etc. and she takes the reader through the exercises and obstacle courses and how to use them to the best advantage for the health and wellbeing of the dog.

Linda has been very well-known for her work with horses, but her methods have proved very effective for all kinds of animals. For dogs, she has helped to eliminate bad habits such as fear biting, chewing things around the house, barking in excess, leash pulling, and many other problems. And the method also has therapeutic value for dogs with conditions such as arthritis.

The book has a large number of colour pictures (255 in all) to help explain the exercises and touches, and the text is very clear and easy to understand. Other books by the author include Getting in TTouch; The Tellington TTouch; Improve Your Horse¹s Well-Being; and Let¹s Ride with Linda Tellington-Jones.

This book would definitely offer better ways of handling dogs for the average owner, and if you have a problem dog to cope with, the TTouch methods are well tried and proved. One I wouldn't be without as I have been learning as much as my dog has. - EP
