Book Review:

Dog Anatomy: A pictorial approach to canine structure

By Peter C Goody

How the dog movesTHIS book contains 150 detailed illustrations and drawings, and is the most complete book on the subject that I have ever read. It could almost be used as a veterinary training volume as its detail is so complete.

But not only the illustrations - the text is also detailed and informative and the references and descriptions could not be faulted.

Although it is about dogs only, no other animals even mentioned, it would be an excellent book for a vet student, or any keen amateur or dog owner to learn more about dogs and the way they move.

The text is written in a more formal style that suits the British and Australasian ideals for non-fiction subjects, but which American readers may find a little dry, however it conveys the required message in an easy style and totally accurate.

I can see this book on the shelves of show judges and breeders, sporting dog breeders, agility and orienteering enthusiasts, as well as vet and vet nurse students, dog racing trainers, mushers and everyone else who ever had any reason to work out how and why dogs move in the way they do.

The reading is easy - although professionals will read and study from this book, it is written with the ordinary non-professional dog owner in mind, so the terms used are not over the head of the average dog owner.

Also it is very easy to trace the systems described on an actual dog - feeling the joints and bones etc from the outside of a real dog gives a reality to the drawings in the book and makes the drawings hugely significant.

Finally, the cost is quite cheap for such a very useful publication. I am sure it will be on many shelves and a book that is consulted on a regular basis. - EP
