101 Salivations: For
the love of Dogs

From Bullfinch Press RRP $US19.95

Book well worth keepingDOGS have for thousands of years been at the centre of human affections. They guard and protect us, lead us when we cannot see, walk alongside us and become our closest pals. Most of all, dogs love and cherish us, until death do us part.

Rachael Hale's 101 Salivations: For the Love of Dogs is a coffee table issue that gets straight to the personality of the dogs pictured and captures them on camera. Rachael is internationally recognised for her photography and has won numerous photography awards in New Zealand and Australia for her animal portraiture. Her first book, 101 Salivations: For the Love of Dogs, is a tribute to the animals that have stood by us for centuries and continue to be our best friends.

Can't do without my milk bathHale says her secret to capturing a dog's soul on film is to focus on its eyes - whether they are wide and shining or heavy lidded in the throes of slumber - and within this book we can see the soul of our own best buddies staring back at us.

The book features 101 colour portraits of almost as many different breeds. This book is already a must-have for dog lovers everywhere and is a perfect gift.

Rachael Hale's images have appeared on greeting cards, posters, calendars and stationery around the world since 1995. It is her affinity with animals - especially dogs - that has allowed her to capture the true essence of her subjects. She currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand, with her chocolate-brown Newfoundland named Henry.

Please dont let those big guys get meThe index in this book is a particularly comprehensive one - each canine picture is identified with his/her name, and a little information on the dog along with its identifying breed.

To start the book there are two pages of information from Rachael about how some of the photographs were devised and problems that had to be overcome. Darcy, the little guy on the left, surprised Rachael by running to safety between her feet rather than take his chances running away from two larger dogs.

Altogether this is a book well worth adding to your canine collection - it will be appreciated by any dog lover who picks it up from your coffee table.
