Pet dog becomes skilled helper
Nat has recently graduated as an independence dog for the disabled.
NAT, a black Labrador retriever, was sold as a puppy to a lovely home as a family pet. Unfortunately for Nat when he was only nine months old he was given back to his breeder due to a change in his owner's circumstances.
Nat showed signs of depression and loneliness for a few days, missing his family, but he was comforted by two other Labradors the breeder had in her home.
Not wanting to put Nat into another family home and take the risk of him being returned again the in future and suffering even worse feelings of loss for a second family, the breeder phoned Canine Partners for Independence, based in the South of England.
A time was arranged to meet one of the trainers so that Nat could go for an assessment of his temperament and trainability. After extensive tests and trials the trainers loved him and found him to have excellent temperament for this type of training.
Nat was taken on for training and now a year later he has graduated as a new canine partner for the disabled. He will now be placed with a disabled person - someone who he will already be acquainted with through his later training sessions - to be a lifetime partner and helper. - Nicole Mackie, Arohanui Labradors
