Always a smile from Sammy

Samantha played life directlySAMANTHA, my little friend of 15 years, died last month after a very short illness. My grandson was present at her burial and he made sure that she had one of her tennis balls buried alongside her - he didn't want her to be without her ball as she loved tennis balls more than any other toy.

Sammy always made a huge impression on everyone who met her - she had the most piercing of light brown eyes and used them to assist her natural alpha status. She knew she was here to make sure that her humans were exercised, and exercised they would be. Often she had to insist on a walk or on a game of ball, and when she insisted there was no saying "no". She could insist for the next 12 hours if she felt so inclined.

Sammy in her last year
Sammy's sense of purpose always showed through, whatever she was doing and wherever she was going.
Sammy was always fair in her alpha position. She had been notorious for nipping the tail or ear of my little Jack Russell cross as he went "innocently" past her, sometimes causing people to think she was a little mean to him. But they never saw the teasing games that he delighted in. He would pretend he didn't want his last piece of biscuit, even look the other way, until Sammy's nose was about two inches from the prize - then he would snatch and run! Other times he would grab her tennis ball from under her very nose and make a dash for it. Variations included leaping across her body when she was resting, or stepping on her bone as he dashed past. He was delighted if he actually caused her to chase him, and he would tuck his tail under his rear and run circles around her - just because he knew he could. And when she dished out a quick punishment he always knew why!

We miss our wee girl, and I suppose we will for a long time to come, but she was one of the good things that sometimes happen and her memory will be a refreshing spot of beauty in a world where often things are not so beautiful.
